"Catherine O'Brien draws on the structure of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy to explore Martin Scorsese's feature films from Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967-69) to Silence (2016). This is the first full-length study to focus on the trajectory of faith and doubt during this period, taking very seriously the oft-quoted words of the director himself: 'My whole life has been movies and religion. That's it. Nothing else.' Films discussed include GoodFellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, Taxi Driver and Mean Streets, as well as the more recent The Wolf of Wall Street. In Dante's poem in 100 cantos, the Pilgrim is guided by the poet Virgil down through the circles of Hell in Inferno; he then climbs the steep Mountain of the Seven Deadly Sins in Purgatory; and he finally encounters God in Paradise. Embracing this popular analogy, this study envisions Scorsese as a contemporary Dante, with his filmic oeuvre offering the dimensions of a cinematic Divine Comedy. Drawing on debates at the heart of religious studies, theology, literature and film, this book goes beyond existing explorations of religion in Scorsese's work to address issues of sin and salvation within the context of wider debates in eschatology and the afterlife."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

The difficulty of translating Dante has, paradoxically, created a steady of flux of translations. Around the year 2000, seven cantiche were translated by Dutchmen and seven by Americans, giving rise to a seminar on the state and tradition of translating Dante in both countries. In the course of discussing these landmark translations, contributors to this volume inevitably make statements about how Dante's masterpiece should be read: as a poem, to be translated fearlessly and confrontationally; as a scholarly text, to be treated cautiously and rigorously; or as some combination of the two?

In a celebratory moment of the Paradiso, Dante has Thomas go round the circle of sage spirits identifying each in turn in point of proper calling and confirming how it is that self is everywhere present to the other-than-self as a co-efficient of being in the endless and endlessly varied instantiation of that being. The image, at once perfectly Dantean and perfectly resplendent, underlies and informs these conversations of mine with Kenelm; for if in reading and rereading the cherished text, I have from time to time felt the need to enter a qualification, it is a matter here, as in the high consistory of paradise, of otherness as both contained and as authorized by sameness, as conditioned and set free by it for a life of its own. Never, in other words, is it a question in what follows of the stark alternativism of the sed contra, but instead a matter of formed friendship, of the kind of friendship which, conceived in love, makes for a sweet choreography of the spirit.

Dante e l'Arte aims at studying and highlighting the central role of Dante in the artistic creation of his time and its aftermath up to the present. The standard structure of the journal consists of two parts: in the first one, exclusive attention is paid to every artistic mode (iconography, drama, music, etc.) within Dante's work; the second part is devoted to the reception of Dante's work in the different artistic modes (drama, visual arts and theater, music, literature, etc.) up till now.
